TikTok Famous
Bringing Students’ Worlds Into the Classroom
Many of today’s students dream of becoming TikTok famous. But beyond the likes and views, what would that actually mean for them? This Building Outside the Blocks (BOB) project, TikTok Famous, turns that fascination into an inquiry-based, curriculum-connected learning experience that also helps students learn more about themselves.
In this project, students explore:
Purpose: If you became famous on TikTok, what would you be known for? Comedy? Education? Art? Advocacy?
Audience Engagement: How would you keep your followers interested over time? What kinds of content strategies would you use?
Goals & Impact: What would be your bigger-picture purpose? Entertainment? Raising awareness? Inspiring change?
Branding & Partnerships: What values would guide your choice of sponsors or products you’d endorse as a brand ambassador?
By answering these questions, students go beyond “I want to be famous” to critically reflecting on their voice, values, and the impact of social media. They’ll develop skills in communication, media literacy, self-awareness, and ethical decision-making, all while having fun imagining their own “viral” journeys.
Why Not Make This a Homework Assignment?
BOB projects are intentionally designed to unfold over time rather than be finished at home. This slow release turns the work from a task into a journey. When students know they’ll present on a chosen date, they pace their thinking, revisit their ideas, and deepen their understanding rather than rushing to “get it done.” It creates time for more meaningful and deeper learning.
Presenting in class also creates a shared learning lab. Students see a range of approaches: what works, what doesn’t, and what inspires them, which sparks reflection and raises the quality of everyone’s work. It builds community, celebrates individuality, and normalizes revision and improvement.
Unlike homework, where the teacher rarely witnesses the process, BOB presentations make the process public. Students receive real-time feedback, develop confidence in their voice, and practice authentic communication skills. This mirrors real-world learning where ideas are pitched, tested, and refined in front of others.
Products with Purpose
Students also consider what products or causes they would represent as brand ambassadors. This invites them to think about alignment between personal values and public partnerships- a skill that extends to citizenship, leadership, and future careers.
Have students present their “TikTok Famous” personas as short video pitches, mock posts, or slideshows. This allows them to practice real-world digital skills while reflecting on the responsibilities that come with influence.
Why it Works: Like all BOBs, this project builds capacity from the inside out. Students design something personal and relevant, but they’re also developing transferable skills: strategic thinking, critical analysis, and ethical reasoning. These apply far beyond social media, and they are authentic ways to engage learners.
